This is a clear example of gender roles in society; a common insult towards men is "fag/faggot" (especially towards gay men) and women don't typically get called the name for that reason. The school should have done a better job with the protection of the targeted students.

I'll use the example of gender roles to illustrate what I mean. Think about it this way. There is a massive three way gender-coordination problem faced by ours and any other species that reproduces sexually. Males have to coordinate with males, so that they don't kill each other over the potential female partners. Females have to coordinate with females so that they don't kill each other over potential male partners. And females and males have to coordinate with each other so that mate selection strategies and preferences are convergent rather than divergent.

Damned if that's not an excellent example of gender roles embedded in language “My dear boy, no woman is a genius. Women are a decorative sex. They never have anything to say, but they say it charmingly. Women represent the triumph of matter over mind, just as men represent the triumph of mind over morals.” In 1890, when Oscar Wilde wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray, the attitude towards women was nowhere close to positive. At a quick glance this seems acceptable but when you look further into the issue you discover that the extreme case is women do all the cleaning, cooking and take care of the children while men rule the household because they provide the income. Although these roles seem to be natural in our society there are many people who do not fit under these norms. Some women would much prefer to be in the workforce than cook and take care of children while some men opt to be stay at home dads. Gender roles are not an issue; the issue is expectations that arise from these claims. Girls are known to be nurturing and supportive while boys are more unique and exhibit more leadership qualities. Gender role expectations don’t end at women...

I am currently enrolled in an online sociology class and we are discussing family, and same-sex marriages. I think this book perfectly describes how offensive the word fag can be to someone who is truly gay. The word fag is thrown around and said as if its a bad things, which I think goes back to the way America see's same-sex marriage, which is bad and wrong. This is a good example of gender roles as men are called 'fags' and women are not.
