I'll use the example of gender roles to illustrate what I mean. Think about it this way. There is a massive three way gender-coordination problem faced by ours and any other species that reproduces sexually. Males have to coordinate with males, so that they don't kill each other over the potential female partners. Females have to coordinate with females so that they don't kill each other over potential male partners. And females and males have to coordinate with each other so that mate selection strategies and preferences are convergent rather than divergent.

“My dear boy, no woman is a genius. Women are a decorative sex. They never have anything to say, but they say it charmingly. Women represent the triumph of matter over mind, just as men represent the triumph of mind over morals.” In 1890, when Oscar Wilde wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray, the attitude towards women was nowhere close to positive. Men did not look at women with much respect and only thought of them as domestic trophy wife. According to Oscar Wilde, they lacked intelligence and the ability to substance. I am currently enrolled in an online sociology class and we are discussing family, and same-sex marriages. I think this book perfectly describes how offensive the word fag can be to someone who is truly gay. The word fag is thrown around and said as if its a bad things, which I think goes back to the way America see's same-sex marriage, which is bad and wrong. This is a good example of gender roles as men are called 'fags' and women are not.
