Conflict theories are perspectives in social science which emphasize the social, political or material inequality of a social group, which critique the broad socio-political system, or which otherwise detract from structural functionalism and political conservativism. Conflict theories draw attention to power differentials, such as class conflict, and generally contrast traditional or historically dominant ideologies1. Conflict theory is most commonly associated with Marxism, but as a reaction to functionalism and positivist methods may also be associated with critical theory, feminist theory, queer theory, postmodern theory, poststructural theory, postcolonial theory, and a variety of other perspectives. In order to study anything one must begin by making assumptions about the nature of what is studied. The ancient Greek, for example, believed that the universe was run according to the whims of the God2. In the contrast, scientist assumes that the universe is orderly and operates in certain regular ways which may be able to discover. Thus, Newton developed the laws of gravity after observing that apples always fall down3. A working set of assumptions is called a perspective, an approach or sometimes a paradigm.
